Chilbolton Atmospheric Observatory (CAO)

As a service to the wider community, the AMOF website showcases atmospheric observatories that are operated by partner organisations. The Chilbolton Atmospheric Observatory is operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and can no longer be accessed through applications to AMOF. You should instead contact STFC for further details.

The Chilbolton Atmospheric Observatory (CAO)

The Chilbolton Atmospheric Observatory is operated by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) RAL Space department in rural Hampshire, southern England (51.14 ºN, -1,44 ºE). For several decades, the site has been used for radio wave propagation studies, atmospheric science research, air quality monitoring, and space situational awareness observations amongst other things.

The Observatory provides access to:

  • Meteorological radars covering a range of wavelengths
  • A suite of additional atmospheric instruments
  • Infrastructure for hosting guest instruments
  • A low electromagnetic interference environment
  • A 500 metre radio wave propagation test range
  • On-site expertise for supporting projects

Data collected at, or in connection with, the Chilbolton Observatory are available through the Centre for Environmental Data Analysis (CEDA).

Visit RAL Space’s Chilbolton Observatory pages for more details.
